3 dimensions, 2 phones...
...but there can be only one winner in our glasses-free 3D smartphone face-off
HTC Evo 3D
3D Skills
The HTC Evo captures the same spec 3D video as the LG (720p @30fps), but colours smudge, detail is lacking and the autofocus struggles. Still, the screen is higher-res than the LG's and gives a similarly impressive sense of depth with your 3D offerings.
Design
A quality shutter button and 2D/3D switch, a ribbed, rubberised case, a dual-LED flash and wider stereoscopic lenses promise more than the camera smarts deliver, but even so the HTC has a premium feel. In a pub table showdown, it wins on looks.
In Use
HTC's Sense carousel of live widgets replaces Android 2.3's sliding home screens. It's lovely to use and keeps you appraised of your social goings on. The HTC's newer OS has other benefits, including easier app management, but it's a close-run thing.
HTC Evo 3D Specs:
Screen 4.3in, 3D capacitive touchscreen, 960x540
OS Android 2.3
Processor 1.2GHz dual-core
Storage 1GB + microSD
Video 720pD30Fps
Camera 5MP (2D), 2MP [3D]
Connectivity 3.5mm, 3G, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, microUSB, Wi-Fi
LG Optimus 3D a.k.a LG Thrill 4G
3D Skills
It's an easy win for the LG here. The Optimus 3D is pre-loaded with 3D games and demo videos that really impress. The hi-def 3D video it shoots is clear, sharp and capable of creating a surprising amount of depth when viewed on a big 3D TV.
Design
These are both big handsets that make the iPhone 4 look dainty. The LG is a mite bigger in area, but not quite as fat, so it's a draw on pocketability. The materials are classy, but the backlit Android keys are forever switching themselves off.
In Use
Until the promised 2.3 update appears, the LG's Android 2,2 OS gifts the HTC some easy points, particularly when it comes to text entry, As with the HTC, the LG's processor is unflappable and response is instantaneous no matter what you're doing,
LG Optimus 3D Specs:
Screen 4.3in, 3D capacitive touchscreen, BDDx4SD
OS Android 2.2
Processor 1 GHz dual-core
Storage BGB + microSD
Video 720p@30Fps
Camera SMP (2D), 3MP (3D)
Connectivity 3.5mm, 3G, Bluetooth 2.1, HDMI, GPS, microUSB, Wi-Fi
Verdict:
The HTC feels great and has plenty of power, but the LG's superior tri-dimensional skills win it the Best 3D Smartie title
