“Save time. Stay organized.” If you’re a Gmail user and that
sounds promising, check out Taskforce Pro ($5 per month; 30-day free trial), an
add-on for Firefox, Chrome, Safari, or RockMelt that converts Gmail messages
into tasks to help organize the inbox. If you’re someone who amasses countless messages deemed too
important to archive only to lose track of them, Taskforce’s worth becomes
apparent quickly.
Upon converting a message to a task, you can archive the
message with the task remaining available in the Taskforce interface situated
at the upper right of Gmail’s window until you complete it. You can also delay
tasks and assign collaborators (including non-Taskforce users) to share updates
without having to exchange multiple messages back and forth. Elsewhere, syncing
with Google Tasks and Calendar, adding a task to an existing task, creating
task lists, and prioritizing tasks is supported. Android and iPhone device
usage is also possible via a mobile browser at Taskforce’s mobile site
(taskforceapp.com/mobile). Additionally, Taskforce can convert entire Web pages
into tasks via a Send To Taskforce extension for Google Chrome available in the
Chrome Web Store.
To install Taskforce, go to www.taskforceapp.com and click Add
To Gmail. Enter your Gmail email address in the Sign Up For Taskforce field and
click Sign Up. Next, click the Get Taskforce button that displays for your
respective Web browser. Because we used Chrome for our tests, Taskforce
navigated us to the Chrome Web Store to acquire the extension. Once installed, you can convert a message to a task either by
clicking Create Task in Taskforce’s interface or by opening a message and
clicking Convert To New Task.
(Taskforce also places Add To Existing Task and
View Task options in new and existing messages.) Next, enter a task
description, assign a due date, and choose a Tasks List (such as Current Tasks)
from a drop-down menu for sorting. To keep the message’s sender updated of task
activities, check Keep [Sender] Updated Via Email. Click Create Task to finish.
From the interface you can view a task’s activities, access a user guide, and customize
settings. (A free version of Taskforce without the Pro features is also
available.)
